What is vaginal smell and what affects it?

Vaginal smell is caused by a combination of secretions and bacteria present in the vagina. In most cases, this odor has a light, musky smell that is considered normal. It obviously varies from woman to woman, but it can be affected by several factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, menstrual cycle, sexual activity and hygiene habits.

What does vaginal smell say about your health?

A strong vaginal smell can be a sign of an underlying health problem, such as:

  • Bacterial vaginosis: This is a common infection caused by an imbalance in the vagina’s natural bacteria. It can lead to a strong, fishy odor, especially after sexual intercourse.
  • Fungal infection: Fungal infections can also cause a change in vaginal odor, often accompanied by itching and irritation. The odor is often described as bread-like or yeasty.
  • Trichomoniasis: This is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a parasite. Symptoms include a strong, unpleasant odor, along with itching and irritation.

If you notice that your discharge smells or is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, pain or abnormal discharge, it is important to seek medical attention. A doctor can determine the cause of the odor and recommend appropriate treatment.

Tips for a fresh vaginal smell

Here are some tips for maintaining a fresh vaginal smell:

  • Hygiene is essential: Clean the outside of your vagina daily with lukewarm water. However, avoid using fragrant products such as scented soap or shower gel, as they can interfere with the natural PH value.
  • Wear breathable clothing: Choose cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing, as this can lead to an accumulation of moisture and bacteria. Use menstrual cups, sponge tampons and menstrual underwear during your period to prevent the growth of bacteria during your period!
  • Eat healthy: A balanced diet can also contribute to healthy vaginal flora. Try to avoid foods rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates, as these can promote the growth of harmful bacteria.
  • Avoid an internal shower: It is important to remember that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ and does not need an internal cleaning. Introducing water or other liquids can upset the natural balance and actually cause more problems. Do not do this!
