On the internet you can read different stories on forums and menstrual cup websites. One reputable brand tells you that you can keep the cup for 8 to 12 hours and the other brand tells you that emptying 2 to 3 times a day is sufficient. There are even brands that claim that you can keep the menstrual cup all day long without worries. However, we recommend that you do not wear the cup for longer than 8 hours. This also applies to all menstrual products.
It is also claimed that wearing a menstrual cup does not put you at risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome, also known as Tampon Disease), because the menstrual cup is not absorbent. We do not entirely agree with this. There is one incident of TSS associated with the use of a menstrual cup in Canada. More information can be found here.
So don’t take any unnecessary risks and make sure you empty and clean the menstrual cup at least every 8 hours.
What can you do to reduce the risk of TSS?
– Hygiene! Make sure you wash your hands well before coming into contact with the menstrual cup. Also wash your hands well after inserting the menstrual cup.
– Make sure you clean and disinfect the menstrual cup well. You can read exactly how to do this here. If you have any of the symptoms listed below, remove the BeppyCUP immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible. Explain to the doctor that you have your period.
